Designed by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser for Bayeriche Flugzeugwerke in 1935, 33,984 produced - most of any aircraft. Held world speed record for piston engine aircraft from 1936-1969.
Served from the Spanish Civil War, and with the Spanish Air Force until 1965. Flying with Jagdgeschwader 52, 3 pilots claimed 928 victories on the Eastern Front with Erich Hartmann credited with 352. Hans-Joachim Marseille credited with 158 during the North African Campaign in 1/3 the time. ARMAMENT: 2/.51” mg, 20mm cannon, 550lbs bombs
