RARE "R" OVER "B" IN GEORGIUS AS FOUND BY DOWLE & FINN #513 AND KRAUSE #117.2
PELLET BEFORE REVERSE LEGEND
Extremely Rare 298 year old coin with the famous Over Date "2" to the Northeast of the Small "3" and visible without a loop and with an off center strike to the upper obverse and lower reverse. This also has the rare "R" over "B" in Georgius.
This coin is known to have a weak strike at the cheek and ear on the Obverse and a weak center strike at the waist of the lady on the reverse. Another later die marker is the die crack at the rim to the top of the head next to the Dot on the Obverse and the die crack that runs along the bottom starting at the lady's foot at 6 0'clock and running alongside the top of Hibernia up to about 9 o'clock.
Wood's Hibernia Coinage were originally intended for use in Ireland. This type has a seated figure with a harp (11 strings) on the reverse side and the word HIBERNIA (MEANING IRELAND). Denominations struck were farthing and halfpenny, with dates 1722, 1723, and 1724.
Hibernia coins were though to be unpopular in Ireland but we now know that was not so but in fact widely used and some were sent or made it to the American colonies with the immigration of Irish citizens which ended up having a large population for the time MAINLY IN THE NORTH EASTERN STATES ESPECIALLY IN NEW YORK so these coins were well accepted and widely used at the time and to find one in AU to Mint State especially with the Over Date is quite rare and this one would make it easily to AU (Almost Uncirculated) in my opinion.
This coin is the very rare variety with the re-punched 1723 over 1722. You should be able to see the right side of the "2" to the right of the Type Two Small Date "3" and if not, it's not an over date. This coin is so well defined on the Over Date that you can also see some of the top right of the "172" of the Over Date as well. You will also see some doubling on the "GRA" of Gratia on the Obverse from being re-struck and the "R" over "B" in Georgius.
As far as grade you be the judge but to find one in this condition is quite rare and you should try and compare for yourself but you will be pressed to find an Over Date of this high quality and grade.
I base my selling prices on what these coins have done at auctions and any reference to grade is that of mine own and you decide for yourself what you believe the quality to be. You can buy heavily worn coins for less money but when a high grade coin is available why not take advantage of having a coin that is not only rare but an investment.
