Rare & Desirable No RF Counter-stamp Example!
1767-A French Colonies 12D
PCGS VF20 Old Green Holder
Important colonial issue. The last coinage issued for the French colonies in America. With the loss of Canada in 1760, only the French holdings in Louisiana and the West Indies remained. The majority of this issue was recalled in 1793 and re-monetized with a counter-stamped over the three fleur de lis, which showed the letters "RF" surrounded by an ornate circle. This crude hammer punch destroyed much of the under-type design. Walter Breen once estimated that 98% of this issue had been defaced with this counter-stamp. While that figure may be a bit high, examples that display the original design are certainly many times scarcer. This crusty, untouched piece could not be any nicer for the issue. No marks to speak of. The obverse displays chestnut brown hues, while the crossed cannons reverse shows a deep mahogany red brown, with a "circulated cameo" effect over the high points.
