Description
This neat variety non-regal farthing is a rare survivor as it is quite thin and lightweight and has obviously seen some damage in commerce. The notable details can be seen - this coin has a bust of King George II and a date of 1773 and since George II died in 1760 this is an impossible date of issue (the bust should be of George III or the reverse should be dated 1727-1760 these being the years of the reign of George II).Obverse struck a little off-center and sized about 21mm & 1.5g.
Non-regal halfpenny families (farthing studies are due in future editions) are discussed in the recent publication "Contemporary Counterfeit Halfpenny & Farthing Families" (Moore, Andrews, Bowser, Howes, Louis, Palmer, Rock, Rose, Schettino, Weston). Families will be expanded and new families added in a future edition of this book.
18th century Georgian halfpennies (and farthings) were used in day to day commerce in colonial and early America. Imitations were produced at unofficial mints in Great Britain and the United States during this era.
