Ex: Donald Partrick Collection, Ex: Col. James W. Ellsworth / John Work Garrett. Obverse die 33.37 is known with reverse dies Z.9 and Z.11. Reverse die Z.9 is known with obverse dies 33.7, 33.20, 33.35, and 33.37. This is a moderately scarce variety, although rare in Brilliant Uncirculated grade. The Garrett cataloger suggests: "Perfectly centered and sharply struck ... A beautiful, defect-free planchet. Overall light iridescent olive color with hints of mint red in some of the letters. One of the finest known if not the finest." Donald G. Partrick simply comments, "Absolute Finest Known." This variety has a weirdly configured colon after CONNEC - placed far too low below the baseline, with the dots squeezed together. A third wayward dot was added, this time too high and in the dentils. This is a fantastic jewel among the few Uncirculated examples available throughout the conditionally challenged series, regardless of die marriage. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book. Ex: Col. James W. Ellsworth Collection; The Garrett Collection Sales, Part 3 (Bowers & Ruddy Galleries, 10/1980), lot 1366; later, Jon Hanson (12/20/2000); Donald G. Partrick.
