Coin Highlights
Struck in pure Copper.
This is the Large Buttons variety, determined by larger buttons on Washington's vest.
Obverse: A right facing bust of Washington wearing a military waistcoat and around him are inscriptions reading G. WASHINGTON. THE FIRM FRIEND TO PEACE & HUMANITY.
Reverse: Has a large grate (a screen placed in front of a fireplace) and the words LONDON 1795 below with inscription around it reading PAYABLE BY CLARK & HARRIS 13. WORMWOOD St. BISHOPSGATE.
Features a diagonally reeded edge.
This token grades as an AU, with very little traces of wear and smooth, brown color.
This British Copper Halfpenny Token was designed by Thomas Wyon, who was employed by the Peter Kempson and Sons Mint in Birmingham. Kempson and Sons was commissioned to design the piece by the London firm Clark and Harris, who were dealers in stoves and fireplace grates. As such, the reverse side of the token features a large and ornate grate.
