I'm digging into my Supro collection this week so keep your eyes open for 2 or 3 more beauties! This is one of my prizes, a rare long-scale violin bass with both a soapbar and piezo pickup. If you are familiar with the much-more-common Pocket Bass then you will be acquainted with just how good this setup sounds.
Supro basses were made in the USA and the company was known for some unusual designs. But they were also the first company to offer ultra-short scale (Pocket Bass) and extra-long scale (the Taurus XL) basses as well as one of the earliest manufacturers to use a piezo bridge pickup on a bass guitar. This one is exceptionally clean with original sunburst finish and the original long hard case with the handle and all latches intact.
The body is alder and the nitro sunburst finish is very rich with ultra-fine finish checking as one would expect from a nitro finish. The bass features
    no
pickguard for a really clean look. Both plexiglas thumbrests are intact and the original and
    rare
bridge cover is included. The soapbar pickup is in the sweet spot and produces full, rich tone on its own. But when you blend in the piezo pickup the sound just opens up, like a fretted upright bass! There are (2) volume controls so the operation is very straightforward.
The maple neck has a thick Brazilian rosewood fretboard and 20 frets with pearl dot inlays. It's very comfortable and has a nice slim profile which you might not expect on such a bass. Nice string spacing for playing with fingers or a pick. There are actually quite a few useable tones for such a simple, passive setup.
There are (2) aluminum reinforcing rods running the length of the neck and no adjustable truss rod. The neck has a very slight relief on both the treble & bass sides. There is no exaggerated 'bow' and no buzzing even on the highest frets.
The Stackole pots date 6323 (23rd week of 1963). The pots are not scratchy at all. All the wiring is intact and the frets show very little wear. Both pickups have good output and are very well-balanced. The case is very clean with good handle & latches; there may have been an insert near the body at one time. Weighs about 9 1/2 lbs and balances quite well.
FREE USA SHIPPING and a 30-day return privilege if you are not happy for any reason.
