Description
Up for sale, a 1990 Fender Precision Bass model PBAC-950 in excellent, 100% condition and in perfect working order. Part of a unique family of Fender basses produced exclusively for the Japanese domestic market which also included the HMT variant, the PBAC-950 is arguably the rarest of the bunch, with semi-hollow body construction, a spruce top, mahogany body, active electronics, and the combination of a Lace Sensor split coil P pickup paired with a piezo pickup underneath the bridge saddle. Clearly styled as a middle ground between the needs of electric and acoustic players, the PBAC satisfies both, with a broad, pillowy natural acoustic tone and woody thump. The sound can be very rich or surprisingly bright and tic-tac flavored, perfect for when you need the percussive sound of a standup bass. Strung with roundwound 45-105 strings, the active EQ brings out the roundness and power which this bass can deliver, also due in part to the string-through body construction. The bass weighs 7lbs 8oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and accurate intonation. While the bass is advertised as a Precision model, the neck is straight out of the Jazz Bass playbook, with a 1 1/2" wide nut and a slender U profile carve with full shoulders in every register and lightly rolled fretboard edges. The profile gains notable heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .810" deep at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard is a dark cut of this particular tonewood, retaining the original medium jumbo frets which have their full factory height and well-rounded crowns, showing just a hint of wear on frets 1-5. The bass plays easily up the 34" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The headstock retains the original clover button tuning machines which turn smoothly with light, uniform surface patina. Above the contoured Fender-embossed four-bolt neck plate, the K-prefix serial number and "Made in Japan" text are also present.
On the bound spruce top, the thick rosewood bridge bass sits flush and features an acoustic instrument-style saddle with ample height. The USA-made Lace Sensor split coil pickup is governed by a trio of transparent knobs including a pickup Blend knob with center detent, EQ knob, also with center detent to toggle from cut to boost, and a Volume knob. The gloss finish on the spruce top is deeply ambered, showing some scattered faint marks across the strum path, and a few additional small chips in the clear coat and minor scuffs on the body as a whole. The gloss finish on the profile is smooth and clean.
The original faux leather form-fit gigbag is included.
