Description
Up for sale, a 2021 Fender Traditional Late 60s Jazz Bass, brand new and sourced directly from Tokyo, complete with the original hangtags. A FSR (Factory Special Run) model virtually unseen outside the Japanese domestic market and made for one specific dealer in Japan, this Traditional 60s Jazz Bass replicates one of the model's most visually alluring and elusive feature sets, with a custom color Olympic White finish complete with matching peghead, a bound rosewood fingerboard with pearloid block inlay, factory-installed "ashtray" chrome pickup and bridge covers, and exact reproductions of Fender's "lollipop" tuning machines. This bass offers a clear and balanced acoustic tone with excellent sustain and strong note attack. The bridge pickup has the power, burp, and presence that ensures a Jazz Bass cuts through in ensemble situations, and it's easy to dial in the right amount of midrange growl and fundamental thump when balancing the sound between the two single coils. The tone can get quite smooth and wide too, simply by rolling off the bridge pickup Volume and Master Tone control, for a thick sound that doesn't lack definition. The bass weighs 9lbs 6oz (or 8lbs 15oz with the pickup/bridge covers removed), professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, strung with the factory roundwound 45-105 strings, and dialed in with low action.
The maple neck has a slender C shape with just enough roundness in the shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges (Fender Japan is advertising this neck as a U shape, but it doesn't quite have the heft in the shoulders to qualify), measuring .815" deep at the 1st fret and .940" at the 12th. The bass has Fender's traditional 1 1/2" Jazz Bass nut width, with a full 34" scale and a modern 9 1/2" fretboard radius on the particularly thick slab rosewood fretboard. The slender vintage-style frets are flawless, and the bass plays cleanly in all registers with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. On the matching Olympic White headstock, the round lollipop button tuners represent the first time Fender has reissued these particular gears on a non-Custom Shop instrument, and they really do round out the late '60s look, turning smoothly with perfect chrome plating.
All of the electronics function flawlessly, and Fender Japan utilizes full-size USA-made CTS pots on this model, complete with USA Fender knobs. The Olympic White finish is very sleek and glossy, accented by a three-ply red tortoise pickguard which still has its protective factory plastic and advert (clear factory plastic is still protecting the pickup covers and poles too).
The Fender-branded gigbag is included, along with the factory hangtags.
