Designed by R.J. Mitchell and Joseph Smith of Supermarine in 1936. 20,351 were manufactured 1938-1948. Made famous during the Battle of Britain, the more agile Spitfire engaged the Me-109s while the more numerous Hurricanes attacked the bombers claiming more of the victories. Flown by every country in the United Kingdom - and the U.S. - it was not fully retired until 1961.
