    Designed for Republic by Alexander Kartveli, ‘The Jug’ was a long-range Fighter/Bomber which operated in all theaters. 15,636 were produced from 1941-1945. From 1943, it escorted the B-17 and B-24 bombers for raids into Germany and was the primary Ground-Attack aircraft claiming 3752 aerial combat victories and destroying 95,000 railroad locomotives and cars, and 74,000 armored vehicles and trucks at a cost of 3499 of their own during the European Campaign. The leading U.S. ‘Ace’ in Europe, Lt. Col. ‘Gabby’ Gabreski, credited with 28 victories in a P-47. (With an additional 6.5 victories during Korea.)
