The HK-1 was joint venture of designer Henry Kaiser and Howard Hughes to produce an aircraft that would fly just above the ocean to avoid German submarines. Kaiser withdrew from the project. Hughes redesignated it the H4 ‘Hercules’. Not completed until 1947, it made a single flight on November 2

. The story is recounted in the film ‘The Aviator’ (2004 - DiCaprio).
