Description
Desirable Copper Coin 1785 Rarity: R-5, Roman Head Connecticut Colonial.Observe: Roman head wearing a laurel wreath draped in a toga, AVCTORI: CONNEC:
Reverse: Seated Liberty (reassembling the British Britannia) with a branch in right hand, INDE. “ET LIB.” is partially faded. As well as date below.
Identified as 2, A1 Miller from Al Hoch chart. Variety nickname: Mailed bust right.
Most probably minted from dies engraved by Abel Buell.
No prominent issues, the letter IP and the number 4 are engraved on reverse.
Coin is Well centered on both sides, typical surface wear, most letters are visible with some fading as well as the date. No porosity or granularity but a nice smooth surface.
Great piece that will surely catch the eye of the astute expert.
A thoroughly appealing mid-grade survivor of the scarce Roman Head Connecticut copper. Evenly toned crimson-brown surfaces are quite smooth overall with minimal granularity. Softly struck in the centers, typical for the variety, with the reverse revealing considerable roughness in that area from the original planchet texture. The detail is considerably bolder toward the borders, which are a bit tight to the lower right on both sides due to less than perfect centering. None of the peripheral devices and involved, however, with all fully defined and readily appreciable. The Miller 2 Roman Head obverse is paired with two different reverses, both die marriages elusive in all grades. A very acceptable specimen of this variety.
