AMERICAN GRUMMAN "HELLCAT" (F6F)
JACK ARMSTRONG CARD PAPER KIT. VICIOUS AMERICAN NAVY CARRIER BASED SINGLE SEAT FIGHTER ABOUT 34' IN LENGTH WITH ABOUT A 43' WING SPAN. PERFORMANCE, POWER, ARMAMENT ETC. IS RIGIDLY RESTRICTED. THE "HELLCAT" DEEP STUBBY SILHOUETTE IS; HOWEVER, A MOST UNWELCOME SIGHT OVER ENEMY SHIPS OR BASES, FOR THIS FIGHTER IS ALL THAT ITS NAME IMPLIES.
HISTORICAL NOTE
: IN 1944 THE GENERAL MILLS COMPANY, SPONSORS OF THE JACK ARMSTRONG RADIO SHOW, INTRODUCED THIS SERIES OF CARD MODELS REPRESENTING THE MOST POPULAR FIGHTERS OF WORLD WAR II. THE MAKERS OF WHEATIES GAVE THOUSANDS OF THESE MODELS TO OUR SERVICEMEN TO BUILD AND FLY WHILE THEY RECOVERED FROM THEIR WARTIME INJURIES. THE MODELS FLEW SO WELL THAT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTS WERE ORGANIZED. AWARDS WERE PRESENTED FOR BEST APPEARANCE, BEST MANEUVERABILITY AND LONGEST FLIGHT.
PLANES WERE ORIGINALLY DESIGNED FOR GENERAL MILLS IN 1944 BY AN ENGLISHMAN NAMED RIGBY. THEY WERE REINTRODUCED IN 1966. CONSEQUENTLY, MANY ADULTS A FEW DECADES YOUNGER THAN MYSELF MAY ALSO REMEMBER THEM. HOPE YOU WILL ENJOY SHARING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO RECAPTURE A SMALL PART OF OUR HISTORY. HOPEFULLY, YOU WILL ALSO TRY A NEW VERSION WHICH IS DESIGNED WITH A TAPERED AIRFOIL WING. IT IMPROVES THE MODEL'S AUTHENTICITY; AND, IN FLIGHT, IT INCREASES LIFT AND SLOWS THE MODEL'S DESCENT. SINCERELY, ROBERT J. FUDOLD
