Rare biography of R. Shmuel Salant in Yiddish and in English, authored by his grandson R. Nosson Nota Salant of New York.
    R' Shmuel Salant
(1816-1909), learned in the great Yeshiva of Volozhin. After marrying the eldest daughter of R. Yosef Zundel Salant, he adopted his father-in law’s family name. In 1840, he settled in Yerusholayim which at the time had a very small community of Ashkenazic Jews. From 1848 to 1851, he served as a SHaDaR (fund-raiser), visiting the principal cities of Lithuania and Poland to raise money for the impoverished Jews of the Old Yishuv. He was known as a great Talmid Chochom and was beloved by the masses. He succeeded R. Meir Auerbach as Chief Rabbi of the Ashkenazic Jerusalem community in 1871. Under his guidance, the community expanded steadily growing from 5,000 to 30,000 Jews, whom he led until the advanced age of 93.
