(飛燕, "flying swallow") a Japanese World War II
    fighter aircraft
" Tony" new in the box.
Box has never been opened. The airplane, wing and cockpit are held in place by rubber bands, the rubber bands are deteriorating and I can not guarantee if they make it through shipping. Some parts might come loose in shipping. If you want me to cut the tape and open the box to secure items, I can do that. In the 5th picture, you can see the failing rubber bands. The box is in great condition.
In April 1940, a team of Japanese engineers returned from Germany with drawings for Daimler Benz's excellent DB 601A 12-cylinder inverted-Vee liquid-cooled engine which powered the Messerschmitt Bf 109. By July 1941 a revised and lightened version of the engine was being produced in Japan as the Kawasaki Ha-40. Kawasaki, impressed by the sleek fighters then fighting in the West, began work on a new fighter to take this engine. The resultant Ki-61 Hien (Flying Swallow) impressed Japanese Army officials with its high performance and was immediately ordered into production.
Deliveries began in August 1942 and its first sorties were flown shortly thereafter by the 68th and 78th Sentais over New Guinea. Codenamed "Tony" by the Allies, the type soon proved that it could hold its own against any opposition if flown well, and continued in almost continuous combat for the remainder of the war.
The compact Ki-61-1 had a wingspan of 39' 4 % and a length of 29' 4". With its 1,175 hp Ha-40 engine, the fighter could reach a top speed of 348 mph. It had a service ceiling of 32,800 feet and a range of more than 1,100 miles. Armamer varied; most early Ki-61-I's had two 20mm German-manufactured Mauser MG 151 20mm cannon in the wings and two 7.7mm machine guns fitted above the engine, whereas the Ki-61-Id had more powerful 30mm cannon fitted in the wings. The Tony was certainly one of the best, and best looking, Japanese aircraft of WWII.
