Here we have a vintage
Girl Scout
First Class Pin
. The First Class award was first introduced in 1918, only a few years after Girl Scouting itself began. The requirements for this award changed over the years, but ultimately scouts who earned this award were considered to be the epitome of scouting: practical, efficient and reliable in every way. For many years, only a First Class patch was issued for official wear. In the Fall of 1941, a First Class pin was introduced and it was wildly popular. It was not for official wear on the Intermediate uniform, but only on the Senior uniform or unofficial clothing. Starting in 1963, First Class was the highest award that could be earned in Girl Scouting. It was finally discontinued in 1982, being the longest-lived award in Girl Scouting.
They started making reproductions in the early 2000's, but they were clearly marked "Repro" on the back. You can see that this one does not, it is absolutely vintage.
The pin itself measures approximately 1/2" x 5/8", with a "j-hook" clasp on back. Two different versions were produced, one with small print and another with large print. I have included a photo showing both styles, for reference only. This particular pin has
