The main reason for lighting two candles in honor of Shabbat is that they correspond to two ways of observing the Shabbat observance. The commandment on Shabbat appears in the Ten Commandments, written twice in the Torah. For the first time, in the Book of Exodus, it is said, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." The second time, in the Book of Deuteronomy, the commandment is, "Keep the Sabbath day holy." This commandment encompasses all the prohibitions involved in keeping the Sabbath. To represent the two aspects of keeping the Sabbath commandment, it is customary to light two candles - one against "Remember", and the other against "Keep"
